Each year the Grove Park Inn Resort and Spa hosts The National Gingerbread House Competition, which is spread throughout its interior areas for visitors to enjoy. Contestants hail from across our great country, bolstering holiday spirits with "sugar-and-spice" architectural masterpieces. The display is not only the best collection of gingerbread houses you will ever see, it is free and viewable 24 hours a day. The rest of the grove park is in full holiday mode as well, and boasts gorgeous holiday displays, a giant fireplace to warm your soul, pictures with Santa, and one of the best views of Asheville from Grove Park’s Sunset Terrace. The grand prize gingerbread winners of the competition are transported to New York City and make their appearance on ABC’s "Good Morning America" show.

In its 6th year, the Asheville Fringe Arts Festival is a multiple venue performance art festival, which pushes artists and audiences to the “fringe” of their comfort level. The festival’s mission is “to provide artists with opportunities to explore the edges of their work, to collaborate across genres and to bring new and innovative performances to culturally adventurous audiences.” This year promises to be a weekend of boundary pushing dance, theater, art, and music. The performances are never well worn acts, but are fresh, innovative, and ones that you definitely won’t see anywhere else. The festival is modeled after the Fringe Movement of 1947, and many of the performances wouldn’t otherwise find a platform to showcase their acts. The Asheville Fringe Arts Festival encourages this avant-garde work, which ranges from acting and dance, to singing, painting, and even multimedia performance art.
