Waterfalls Near Asheville

Buncombe County, whose county seat is Asheville, is in the heart of Western North Carolina. Whatever your reason for visiting Western NC, you are likely to stop in Buncombe County, as the two major highways, Hwy 40 and Hwy 26, intersect here. Asheville is a great hub for outdoor enthusiasts interested in all types of outdoor fun. For this waterfalls guide we have chosen to feature three waterfalls in Buncombe County: Douglas Falls aka Carter Creek Falls, Glassmine Falls, and Walker Falls. All three of these falls offer easy trails, one can even be viewed from the road and another is handicapped accessible.

Douglas Falls (Carter Creek Falls)

Directions: Follow the directions to Walker Falls (listed below) and continue another 4.6 miles along F.R. 74 until you reach a parking area. There are two trails that begin at the end of the road. The right-hand trail will take you to Douglas Falls.

Trail Length: 0.5 miles
Trail Difficulty: Easy to Moderate

Glassmine Falls

Directions: Drive to Milepost 361.1 on the Blue Ridge Parkway. The falls can be viewed from the overlook itself and visitors may also walk a short distance to the upper viewing area.

Trail Length: Falls can be viewed from the roadside.
Trail Difficulty: No Sweat! Handicapped accessible.

Walker Falls

Directions: Drive to Milepost 367.6 on the Blue Ridge Parkway and turn right at the sign for the Craggy Gardens Picnic Ground. You will reach F.R. 63 after 0.3 miles. Turn left, and follow the road for 6.3 miles where it intersects Dillingham Road (S.R. 2173). Turn right onto Dillingham Road and drive 5.2 miles. Note that Dillingham Road becomes F.R. 74 prior to reaching the waterfall, which will be on the left side of the road.

Trail Difficulty: No Sweat! Handicapped accessible.
