Every state has their own set of laws. Before riding in a new state, it is important that you familiarize yourself with state laws. This section will walk first time riders through getting their license and outline laws specific to North Carolina and surrounding states.

How to Get Your Motorcycle License

  1. Study the Motorcyclists’ Handbook. You can find a PDF copy at: www.ncdot.org.

  2. Go to the DMV for your permit. A permit is administered for 18 months, and is virtually the same as a licence but you cannot ride a passenger. A permit requires the successful completion of a written test. The test is tricky so make sure you really read through the Motorcyclists' Handbook. The cost of a learner's permit is $15.00.

  3. Motorcycle Safety Foundation Course! (optional) www.msf-usa.org
Successful completion of this course will save you money on insurance and a written test will only be required to obtain your license.

  4. Go get your license. When you are ready go to the DMV, complete your tests, pay another $20.00, and get that "M" endorsement on the back of your NC License. The DMV tests:
    1. Vision
    2. Traffic Signs
    3. Motorcycle Knowledge
    4. Motorcycle On-Cycle Skills (Road Test)

Note: One doesn't have to get their license and permit in town. Sometimes the other DMV branchs (ones outside of Asheville) have less traffic. This is usually a good idea unless you like long lines and frustration.
