Glossary of Motorcycle Terms
Bottom end - refers to the part of the bike under the engine where the crankshaft and usually the transmission are.
Carburetor - mixes fuel with the air to create the fuel charge burned in the combustion chamber.
Chassis - the combined frame and suspension on a motorcycle.
Clutch - a device that disengages power from the crankshaft to the transmission, allowing the changing of gears.
Combustion chamber - area at the top of the cylinder where the fuel charge burns and pushes the pistons down.
Counter-Steering - the act of using the handlebar as a lever to turn. It’s called so because if you want to turn right you turn the handlebars to the left and vice versa.
Fairings - devices mounted on the front of a bike to protect the rider from the elements.
Fuel-injection systems - mix the fuel-air charges and forcibly inject them onto the combustion chambers.
Induction system - the device that mix the air and fuel charge and inject it into the combustion chamber.
Lane Splitting - riding between lanes of traffic on the highway. While this is often looked at as highly dangerous, some studies suggest this as safer than idling in traffic jams.
Naked bikes - bikes without any type of fairing.
RPM (revolutions per minute) - refers to the number of times the crankshaft spins around per minute, the term revs is often used as a slang.
Sport Tourers - a bike for longer rides but also the handling and power of a sport bike.
Top end - refers to the upper part of the engine which hosts the pistons, cylinders, valve gear and induction system.
Touring bike - bike ready for longer rides that use fairings and saddle bags for comfort ability.
Valve train - system of valves the let the fuel charges in and let the exhaust go out.
