Watch out for POISON IVY in WNC, it grows everywhere!

  • Comfort and Safety are important no matter what sport we are talking about. In Western North Carolina there are a few minor things to mention:

    • Poison Ivy: It’s everywhere in WNC and especially out at the Richmond Hill Course. So remember the old adage, “leaves of three, let it be!” Familiarizing yourself with poison ivy identification is a good idea, and even if you don’t think you can get it, remember that upwards of 90% of people are allergic to urushiol oil.

    • Sun Protection: Sun protection is always a good idea…prevent sunburn or heat stroke by covering yourself and applying sun block.

    • Proper Hydration: Drinking plenty of water keeps the body lubricated, cushions joints, carries oxygen and nutrients into all your cells…water is good, you should drink plenty of it while on the course!

  • Choosing the Right Disc: With the large selection of discs on the market today, it is easy to get inundated. Beginners should typically start with lighter discs and work their way up to the heavier discs. This will give beginners a chance to work on technique and control before making the leap to the long range discs.

  • Cultivating Control & Technique: Playing with experienced players is invaluable. As with any sport, watching and learning from experienced players will help you to cultivate your game. Power counts for something but proper technique and motion are key to Disc Golf. Newer players try so hard to throw a long drive, but working on keeping the disc flat and getting it to fly straight is what you want. With time and practice, you will develop the skills that will eventually allow you to rip those crazy, long throws.
