The city of Asheville, NC and the surrounding area of Western NC, have several major daily and weekly newspapers, as well as a wide variety of weekly and monthly news and cultural publications. As far as the Asheville Metro region is concerned the most popular local newspapers are the Asheville Citizen-Times, The Mountain Xpress, and the Asheville Daily Planet. The Asheville Citizen-Times is the oldest and most widely circulated newspaper in Asheville. The Citizen-Times is a daily paper, in the traditional newspaper format, similar to dailies in other large cities. The Mountain Xpress, a member of the Association of Alternative Newsweeklies, has been publishing city news; art and cultural commentary and events; and investigative reporting, covering Asheville and Buncombe County, since 1995. In 2004 another alternative newsweekly came into existence in the form of the Asheville Daily Planet. The Daily Planet is an independent weekly newspaper covering a wide range of Asheville news, culture, sports, and events.
