Haywood Rd crosses the French Broad River just west of Downtown Asheville where it turns northeast. This section of West Asheville was one of the last areas of town to see the revitalization that began with the downtown renovation in the mid-1990s. Because of this late bloom, the Haywood Rd has seen a booming real estate market over the last four or five years. While many of the best deals are gone and the prices are no longer at the depressed levels they were a few years ago, there are still good deals to be had in this neighborhood.
Enka, Candler and Canton
Located along westbound Hwy 19/23, also known as Patton Ave and Smokey Park Hwy farther west, are the rural towns of Enka and Candler. Farther to the west is the town of Canton. All three of these communities lie in a valley which is characterized by highly rural development patterns, with the exception of a few large high end developments. The best known of these developments is the Biltmore Lake community. Biltmore Lake is a large high end community built around a 64 acre lake formerly known as Enka Lake near the intersection of Smokey Park Hwy and Sand Hill Rd. As is often the case with large isolated planned communities, the influx of affluent people brought to the area by Biltmore Lake has spurned commercial development along Sand Hill Rd near the development. There are currently several commercial projects in various phases of construction in the area including shopping, business parks, apartments, and condos.
Waynesville is located 30 miles west of Asheville on Hwy 40. Waynesville is far enough away from Asheville to have an isolated culture which is less directly influenced by Asheville than many other communities located closer to the city. Visit www.waynesville.com for more information.
Technically, Leicester Hwy travels more north than west, however this area of often characterized as West Asheville because one must travel two miles west on Patton Ave to reach the beginning of New Leicester Hwy. Traveling northwest on New Leicester Hwy the landscape quickly transforms from the commercial feel of Patton Ave to an extremely rural countryside with rolling hills and low population density. If you don’t mind the rural lifestyle and a fifteen to twenty minute commute to downtown, there are still many good deals to be had in this area.
