Asheville Education - Public and Private Schools and Colleges

A little bit about Asheville Education

  • The Asheville area has two public school systems, the Buncombe County School System and the Asheville City School system. There are also many types of private education options for Asheville citizens.

  • The Buncombe County School system is the eighth largest in the state and serves approximately 25,000 students in approximately 42 school programs. The Buncombe County School System also operates Buncombe Community School (east and west campuses), The Progressive Education Program, and The Career Education Center. The Buncombe Community School is an alternative program for students who don't quite fit into their district's curriculum. The Progressive Education Program offers special education curriculum. The Career Education Center is an extension of the high school curriculum, offering classes not available in the home schools, including cosmetology, computer engineering, network engineering, graphic communications, masonry, and welding as well as traditional academic courses.

Asheville City Schools also offers a preschool and Family Literacy Center.

  • The Asheville City School system elementary program has six schools. Each of these schools supports a magnet theme or a specific concentration. Furthermore, parents can select the magnet school they believe best suits their child's needs. The elementary schools and concentration or theme is listed below:

    • Claxton Elementary: Humanities
    • Dickson Elementary: Experiential Education
    • Hall-Fletcher Elementary: Science, Math and Technology
    • Jones Primary/Randolph: Core Knowledge

  • Most schools in each system offer after-school childcare. All elementary schools in the Asheville City School system offer after-school care.

  • The Asheville City School system is directed by a five-member Board of Education that is appointed by the City Council. The Buncombe County School system is directed by a seven-member Board of Education, with six members elected to represent the districts and the seventh member elected at large.
