A little bit about Asheville Education
- The Asheville area has two public school systems, the Buncombe County School System and the Asheville City School system. There are also many types of private education options for Asheville citizens.
- The Buncombe County School system is the eighth largest in the state and serves approximately 25,000 students in approximately 42 school programs. The Buncombe County School System also operates Buncombe Community School (east and west campuses), The Progressive Education Program, and The Career Education Center. The Buncombe Community School is an alternative program for students who don't quite fit into their district's curriculum. The Progressive Education Program offers special education curriculum. The Career Education Center is an extension of the high school curriculum, offering classes not available in the home schools, including cosmetology, computer engineering, network engineering, graphic communications, masonry, and welding as well as traditional academic courses.

- The Asheville City School system serves approximately 4,000 students in nine schools, and the city preschool program serves approximately 235 students ages birth to four. The Asheville City School system operates K-12 programs in their district (see Asheville City Schools). In addition the system opperates the Accelerated Learning Center, a school for middle grade students that encourages students to reach their maximum academic potential through a low pupil/teacher ratio (10/1) and emphasis on parent involvement. Asheville City Schools also offers a preschool and Family Literacy Center.
- The Asheville City School system elementary program has six schools. Each of these schools supports a magnet theme or a specific concentration. Furthermore, parents can select the magnet school they believe best suits their child's needs. The elementary schools and concentration or theme is listed below:
- Claxton Elementary: Humanities
- Dickson Elementary: Experiential Education
- Hall-Fletcher Elementary: Science, Math and Technology
- Jones Primary/Randolph: Core Knowledge
- Vance Elementary: Classical Studies
- Most schools in each system offer after-school childcare. All elementary schools in the Asheville City School system offer after-school care.
- The Asheville City School system is directed by a five-member Board of Education that is appointed by the City Council. The Buncombe County School system is directed by a seven-member Board of Education, with six members elected to represent the districts and the seventh member elected at large.

- "Buncombe County scores consistently rank among the top five in North Carolina. In 2006, Buncombe County ranked second in the state among school systems with more than two high schools. All six of Buncombe County high schools as well as the Middle College posted total mean scores that exceeded the state average. Four of the six high schools had average scores higher than students across the nation."
- The writing component of the SAT is a new assessment for 2006. Most colleges still base their admissions decisions on the Verbal/Math combined score.

"As a comprehensive community college, A-B Tech is committed to providing accessible, quality educational opportunities for lifelong learning to meet the diverse and changing needs of the community," (Exert from ABTech's Mission Statement). Asheville-Buncombe Technical Community College offers technical and pre-baccalaureate programs in allied health and public service education, business and hospitality education, engineering and applied technology, and arts and sciences. One can simply take a course or two or to earn a certificate, or take on a full program to earn a diploma or degree. A variety of noncredit classes are also available through the college's Continuing Education Division. ABTech was named an Inviting School by the International Alliance for Invitation Education. The campus is located one mile south of downtown Asheville.

Western Carolina University offers programs at the baccalaureate, master's, intermediate, and doctoral (education) levels. Its instructional programs are organized in four undergraduate colleges (applied sciences, arts and sciences, business, and education and allied professions) and a graduate school. WCU offers resident-credit undergraduate, and graduate-level courses and programs on the main campus, located one hour west of Asheville, in Cullowhee, as well as at their satellite campuses in Cherokee and Asheville. Graduate programs held at their Asheville campus include accountancy, business administration, counseling, education, health sciences, human resource development, nursing, project management, public affairs, and technology. Undergraduate programs in Asheville include clinical laboratory sciences, criminal justice, industrial and engineering technology, nursing, and special education.

Warren Wilson College is a small private liberal arts college located 10 miles east of Asheville in Swannanoa. It is known for its unique curriculum that combines work, academics and service in a distinctive educational environment known as "the Triad." The Triad requires every student to hold an on-campus job, perform one hundred hours of community service before graduation, as well as complete a standard academic regimen. Blue Ridge Community College, which has had its doors open for nearly four decades, is committed to enriching the lives of those within their reach through education, training, and cultural activities. The Blue Ridge Community College occupies facilities on a 140-acre campus. A ten-building complex provides 279,288 square feet of floor space, divided into shop and laboratory space, classrooms, library, learning center, office and reception space, and student lounge area. Campus facilities include a comprehensive library, a state-of-the-art environmental and safety training center, a 450-seat teaching and performing auditorium, a lecture center, a 66,000 square foot applied technology training center, and a two-way interactive distance learning center. Haywood Community College offers accessible educational, social, and cultural opportunities to residents of Haywood County and the surrounding area. Through its open-door policy, the College strives to meet the needs of students with varying backgrounds, resources, interests, abilities, and career goals. The Haywood CC curriculum spans a broad scope of higher education from associate degree programs (arts, applied sciences, fine arts, science and general education), diploma programs for entry-level employment preparation, and certificate programs for a variety of industries. Haywood CC also offers less structured programs for college preparation, college transfer, and continuing education.

Established in 1916, Montreat College is a private, Christian college located in a beautiful valley in the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina. The College is affiliated with the Presbyterian Church USA. Mars Hill College is nestled into the Mountains of WNC, and is approximately 10 miles north of Asheville. It is a Liberal Arts college with a well trained faculty. Appalachian State University is a public university located in Boone, North Carolina. ASU offers 91 undergraduate and 81 graduate degree programs, and is comprised of the following five colleges: Arts & Sciences, Fine Arts & Applied Sciences, Business, Music and Education. At 3333 feet, ASU is situated at the highest elevation of any university east of the Mississippi River. Located on 340 acres, the university boasts 17 residence halls, 3 dining facilities and 15 academic buildings. Despite its fairly large student body, ~14,000 students, Appalachian State offers small class sizes and an overall small school feel. ASU is a member of the Southern Conference. It participates in a full range of NCAA Division I athletics, and are often ranked among the top Division I AA football programs in the nation.
