"Tai Chi Chuan, a Chinese way of exercise for body and mind in harmony, is practiced in slow, relaxed motion. Its theory is based on the Yin and Yang philosophy, which is derived from I Ching, or the Book of Changes. Tai Chi Chuan forms are mostly practiced in circular movements. In practicing the forms, firstly, you should calm down and concentrate your mind; secondly, the distribution of your strength should follow the Yin and Yang principle, so that you can achieve physical and mental balance." - T.R.Chung
The Chinese characters for Tai Chi Chuan can be translated as the 'Supreme Ultimate Fist.' Tai Chi can perhaps best be thought of as a movement exercise that combines elements of yoga and meditation. There are a number of styles and forms, which consist of sequences of movements. Many of these movements are originally derived from the martial arts, but also relate to the natural movements of wild animals. The forms are performed slowly, softly and gracefully with smooth and even transitions between them. Although Tai Chi is historically related the martial arts it is usually practiced as meditative exercise for the body. Tai Chi is credited with many therapeutic benefits for both the mind and body and is sometimes recommended for specific medical conditions. The historical roots of Tai Chi date back over 2500 and may have originated with Chinese Taoist teachers.
