Neuromuscular massage is a form of deep tissue massage that utilizes static pressure on specific myofascial points to relieve pain. Neuromuscular therapists use alternating levels of concentrated pressure on the areas of muscle spasm that are causing acute or chronic pain. It is used to increase blood flow, reduce pain and release pressure on nerves caused by injuries to muscles and other soft tissue. Neuromuscular massage helps release intense knots of tense muscle called trigger points, which can also "refer" pain to other parts of the body. The massage therapy pressure is usually applied with the fingers, knuckles, or elbow.
