Hypnosis is a state between full consciousness and dreaming where the brain's electrical activity is in the alpha range (8-13 Hz). During hypnotherapy the patient is in a trance-like condition, but with an enhanced state of awareness, concentrating entirely on the hypnotist's voice. Hypnosis usually involves the person experiencing a sense of deep relaxation with a focused attention. In this state, the conscious mind is suppressed and the subconscious mind is revealed. The therapist is able to suggest ideas, concepts and lifestyle adaptations to the patient, the seeds of which become firmly planted. As such, hypnotherapy is a kind of psychotherapy. Hypnotherapy aims to re-program patterns of behavior within the mind, enabling irrational fears, phobias, negative thoughts and suppressed emotions to be overcome. There is a proven scientific basis for the effectiveness of hypnotherapy. Although hypnotic suggestions made by a certified hypnotherapist can have a profound positive effect on the patient's future behavior, there is no scientific evidence to suggest that subjects can be made to do anything against their will. Two of the most common applications of hypnotherapy are in the treatment of substance addiction and eating disorders.
