Dance or movement therapy is the therapeutic use of dance and movement to improve the mental, physical and spiritual well being of a person. The use of dance as a therapeutic tool is founded in the idea that body and mind are completely integrated. Movement therapy uses creative and expressive dance or movement as the primary means to address emotional issues and increase emotional and physical health. The theory underlying dance therapy, is that body movement reflects the inner state of ones consciousness and that by moving our body we can actually change our mind in a positive way. Emerging inner conflicts and issues from the unconscious to the consciousness of the person are addressed on all levels - physically, emotionally, mentally and spiritually. Dance Therapy has its roots in modern dance, from pioneers including Isadora Duncan, Martha Graham and Doris Humphrey in the 1920s, but was developed as a therapeutic tool by dancer and choreographer Marion Chace who began giving lectures and demonstrations in the 1940s.
