Chi Kung or Qigong is the ancient Chinese art and science of cultivating life energy and learning how to control its flow through practicing a set of exercises, breath awareness and meditation. Like biofeedback and advanced types of yoga, Chi Kung / Qigong teaches psychophysiological self-regulation. As the student becomes more aware of bodily functions, conventionally considered involuntary such as blood pressure, respiratory rate, even the flow of blood and nutrients to internal organs, he / she learns to restore a healthier balance, prevent disease and even cure common aliments. However, unlike biofeedback, no technical devices are needed. Chi Kung is one of the most cost-effective self-healing methods in the world. The only investment needed is time, a half-hour to an hour each day; the dividends of better health, increased vitality, and peaceful alertness accrue daily and are cumulative. There is some evidence that Chi Kung / Qigong is effective in the treatment of some forms of degenerative disease such as cardiovascular disease and cancer. There are several excellent teachers of Chi Kung / Qigong in the Asheville area.
