The Chakras are usually described as etheric whirlpools of energy in the form of lotus flowers or wheels, which are situated at seven positions (Root, Spleen, Solar Plexus, Heart, Throat, Third Eye, and Crown) on the torso and head. Chakras and their functions were first mentioned in the Vedas, ancient Hindu texts of knowledge. The word Chakra comes from the Sanskrit language (an ancient Hindu language), meaning wheel or disk. The Chakras are located along the subtle body that overlays the physical body. Each Chakra goes from front to back passing though the central spinal column. These energy wheels regulate the flow of energy through our energy system. Chakras are not physical in a material sense but work through the physical body through the endocrine and the nervous system so are therefore associated with particular parts of the body. Each Chakra correlates to major nerve ganglia branching forth from the spinal column. In addition the chakras also correlate to levels of consciousness, archetypal elemental stages of life, colors, sounds, body functions, and much, much more. If a person's chakras aren't spinning properly, the physical, emotional and mental body aren't working in harmony with each other and the result is often mental or physical illness. We need to cleanse and balance our Chakras constantly to maintain a balance of energy. Chakra cleansing and balancing is performed using various methods evolving light, sound, touching, diet to name just a few.
