Pilates (pronounced puh-LAH-teez) is something like a cross between yoga, stretching and calisthenics. What makes Pilates different from Yoga is that it's more dynamic and active. There are several schools of Pilates that vary the basic theme, developed by Joseph Pilates in Germany during WWII. In all, there are about 40 mat exercises designed by Pilates that are performed lying on your back, side or front. Some of the exercises are done seated or on all fours. The mat exercises target the deep abdominal and spine muscles in order to provide core strength. Pilates is recommended by those in the chiropractic profession for strengthening the back and the spine. After a regular Pilate's regimen, one can expect increased mobility in one's joints, a flatter stomach, thinner waist and thighs, and improved circulation. Asheville has several excellent Pilates studios.
