Both an art and a science, macrobiotics is a way of life tailored to individual purposes and needs. The promise of macrobiotics is a life of well being, happiness, and independence. Balanced eating and thought can bring about healing and continued wellness. The key components of a macrobiotic way of life in a temperate climate entail: Eating whole grains, fresh vegetables, beans and bean products, sea vegetables and pickles. Avoiding refined and extreme foods including white sugar and flour, dairy products, meat, eggs and tropical foods. Increasing variety in food selection and cooking methods. Eating regularly and in less quantity. Chewing more. Maintaining an active and positive life and mental outlook with an expanding and increasing cosmic awareness.

The Asheville area has a very active macrobiotic community with classes and monthly potluck dinners.
