Acupuncture is an ancient, 3000 year old, Chinese practice performed by stimulating designated points on the body—through the insertion of needles, finger pressure, the application of heat, or a combination of all these treatments. The practice is part of a larger integrated system called Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). According to the Chinese, there is a network of energy (called chi or qi) that flows through the body and connects acupuncture points through different channels called meridians. These channels are related to specific internal functions, organs and organ systems, and any imbalance in the flow of energy will cause a disease, pain and even emotional changes. Therefore, the purpose of acupuncture assessments and treatment is to detect energy imbalance and bring them into balance.

The North Carolina Association of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine has a licensing board that strictly regulates the requirements for practice in the state. The Asheville area is blessed with many high qualified practitioners that have been trained at some of the world's most prestigious schools and institutions.
