A fan once said, "It's sounds like James Brown's band went to Africa." Bringing funk music back to its African roots is precisely what the Afromotive is doing with their style of afrobeat music. Based in Asheville, NC, this large ensemble stays true to the elements that started afrobeat music - West African rhythms, song forms, and instrumentation- while bringing the music to the 21st Century through strong song writing, improvisation, and heavy beats. Thirty-third generation djembe player Adama Dembele from Cote d'Ivoire, West Africa brings his vast musical knowledge and touring experience to the Afromotive. These traditional West African rhythms combined with a mentality for upbeat funk music is what the Afromotive brings to its audiences. They have created a sound that crosses musical and ethnic boundaries. On their debut album "Scare Tactics," The Afromotive takes the raw energy of their live performance into the studio. This album is an elaboration on the language of afrobeat music, yielding a truly unique sound that is rooted in tradition.

“Dumpstaphunk is the best funk band from New Orleans right now.” - New York Times. Formed in 2003, Ivan Neville’s Dumpstaphunk was initially put together by keyboardist Ivan Neville on a whim in order to perform a solo gig at the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival. Ivan called in cousin Ian Neville (guitar), the double-bass bottom of both Nick Daniels and Tony Hall, and drummer Raymond Webber to round out the show. Named after a song Ivan had recently written, Dumpstaphunk’s informal performance became that of immediate legend. The project has since grown from chance side-project into what is now widely considered to be New Orleans’ most popular musical export. The band was recently voted 2007’s “New Orleans Best Funk Band” by both Offbeat Magazine and Gambit Weekly, and performs at some of the nation’s largest music festivals such as Bonnaroo, Voodoo Fest, 10,000 Lakes, and High Sierra. Founders Ivan Neville and Ian Neville (sons of both Aaron Neville and Art Neville respectively), along with Nick Daniels, Tony Hall, and Raymond Webber, were brought up in an atmosphere of sounds that have arguably become the most defining in all of New Orleans music. But don’t let the pedigree of lineage from the Meters and Neville Brothers fool you either. Ivan Neville’s Dumpstaphunk now stands on its own as the legitimate torchbearer of all things funky both in New Orleans and beyond with the release of their debut EP, Listen Hear.

The Orange Peel, opened (for the second time) in the Fall of 2002 and has quickly made a name for itself from coast to coast as a great place to see live music. The building was a skating rink in the 1950's, after that it was the site of several soul and R&B clubs, the most prominent was called, The Orange Peel. After 20+ years of sitting mostly vacant, the club was renovated and reopened by new management, but kept the same name. Ever since, national and international bands of all styles have been playing the Peel to rave reviews. Some of the more prominent artists to perform include Bob Dylan, the Flaming Lips, Blondie, Jurassic 5, and Joe Cocker. The Orange Peel is only open when there is a show scheduled. Shows are scheduled frequently, almost always on weekend nights and occasionally up to seven nights a week. Shows usually start at 8 or 9pm, and last for varying lengths depending on the artist performing. It contains a hardwood floor, high ceiling, a powerful sound and light system, and 'the cleanest toilets in the South'. Most shows are 18 and over, although some are 16+ or all ages, consult the club for more info. This thousand-person capacity venue frequently sells out, so if there's a show you're set on attending, you might want to get advance tickets to avoid disappointment. The Orange Peel is a NON SMOKING venue. No membership is required, beer and wine is served, and the average ticket price range is $12-$18 (sometimes more, sometimes less).
