Melissa Ferrick is a respected feminist singer/songwriter whose independent spirit, confessional lyrics and frenetic acoustic guitar playing has won her many fans. Ferrick has drawn comparisons to fellow female solo artists Ani DiFranco and Tori Amos. Ferrick grew up in Ipswich, Massachusetts and attended both Berklee College of Music and the New England Conservatory of Music. She's fluent in multiple instruments but found her love in the guitar--the instrument that unlocked her voice. In 1993, Atlantic signed her and released her first record, Massive Blur. Ferrick, an openly gay performer, has built her career on an intimate relationship with her fan base. She came out to the public in 1995 and in 1999, her record Everything I Need was voted Album of the Year by the Gay and Lesbian American Music Association. She performed at Austin's South by Southwest Music Festival in 2006 and continues to tour this spring in support of her 2006 release, In the Eyes of Strangers.
