First and foremost Asheville offers a community of socially conscious, open minded people who promote positive health choices and therefore a greater level of health consciousness. This atmosphere attracts healers, outdoor enthusiasts, and overall holistically healthy individuals. Secondly, Asheville is an outdoor buff’s dream playground. These extensive and life filled Mountains offer hiking, biking, climbing, whitewater, and skiing among many other wonderful physical activities. With four distinct seasons, there are few athletic activities that Asheville cannot offer its inhabitants.

Physical Fitness could easily be defined as being in good physical condition or being in shape. However, it can also be thought of as a state well-being or quality of life and also the ability to perform specific aspects of life as to get the most out of each activity that we engage in. This applies to whether we are talking about a passion, sports, occupation, or merely a hobby.

Physiologically, physical fitness is the capacity of the heart, blood vessels, lungs, and muscles to function at optimum efficiency. When our country was in its infancy, fitness was thought of as the ability to carry out the day’s activities without gratuitous fatigue. The Industrial Revolution marked a change in how we as Americans perceive fitness. With changes in lifestyles, more leisure time, and automation, fitness changed from being able to perform one’s duties to the achievement of optimum efficiency.

As mentioned before Asheville has tons to offer and is the outdoor playground of the Southeast. But apart from its natural beauty, Asheville and Western North Carolina have many other fitness opportunities available to its populace. There are literally hundreds of Gyms & Fitness centers, as well as sports leagues, intramural leagues, summer sports programs, summer camps, outward bound programs, athletic clubs, alternative health practitioners, and skilled martial artists living right here in Western North Carolina. Two the better known organizations that promote physical fitness are the YWCA of Asheville and the YMCA of Western North Carolina.
