History of the Grove Park Inn
The Grove Park Inn was the project of Edwin Wiley Grove and his son-in-law, Fred Loring Seely. Grove, a pharmacist from St. Lewis, was drawn to the mountains of Western NC by his belief that the climate in the Appalachian Mountains offered health benefits. The massive construction effort was completed in 1913. Throughout its existence the Grove Park Inn has hosted well known celebrities and politicians including Thomas Edison, Henry Ford, Woodrow Wilson, John D. Rockefeller, Howard Taft, Franklin D. Roosevelt, Herbert Hoover, Dwight Eisenhower, and Harry Houdini. During World War II the Grove Park Inn served as an internment center for axis diplomats and the operational center for the exiled Government of the Philippians.
