Asheville Civic Center Renovation Controversy
For a number of years the Asheville Civic Center has been at the center of a heated debate surrounding the proper action necessary to repair or rebuild the structure. The Civic Center is in desperate need of repairs and upgrades and many citizens and business owners support the complete replacement of the building. Some propose that the building be destroyed with its replacement being built in the same location, while others favor building a new Civic Center elsewhere in downtown or at the edge of town. Despite pressure from the community, the city and state departments involved have made little headway on the renovations, offering little more that budgeting of minor repairs and a new green roof. This issue remains a hot topic with no simple resolution in sight.
