Saturday night I attended the One Year Anniversary Party for Youth OUTRight at Firestorm Cafe in Asheville. As an adult I mostly observed and talked with friends, some who are parents of the teens involved with Youth OUTRight and Asheville High's GSA (Gay Straight Alliance). Refreshments were available and 'Now You See Them', a super-fun acoustic indie/folk trio dedicated to delivering a great time, did just that. The mood was cheery and the space felt safe which can be a rare kind of ambiance at teen events. I feel that the night was a success in spreading the word about the organization and creating a venue for members of Youth OUTRight to connect and celebrate.

Youth OUTright's mission is to provide affirmation, information, support and resources to LGBTQ and straight allies ages 14 through 23 in Western North Carolina. We believe, simply, that it's okay to be gay and that all should feel free to live openly, enjoy life and be exactly who they are, regardless of gender identity or sexual orientation. We value the worth and dignity of all people and we believe that those who don't, need a little more information and understanding about life and human existence.

WNC Youth OUTRight has social meetings every Friday night from 6:30-9:00pm at the Jefferson House, next to Unitarian Universalist Church of Asheville. Each meeting is structured to include a group sharing session, and an educational program.

Meetings are free, confidential and open to youth ages 14-23. Refreshments are served, and free educational pamphlets and newspapers are available for you and your parents to take home. One of our facilitators will introduce themselves and help you get comfortable in the room. We open the meeting by introducing ourselves around the circle, and getting to know each other. Then we move on to our evening program. Check our calendar on the front for upcoming programs! It's a very casual, friendly atmosphere with 3 trained adult facilitators present at each meeting.
