Demolishing Old Buildings to Make Way for the New

The view from the Smoky Park Bridge is about to improve greatly - no more "Blue Buildings" at the river's edge. A new sculpture park will take their place in the Wilma Dykeman RiverWay. This latest river improvement is a result of a grant RiverLink received from the Asheville Merchants Association. D. H.  Griffin Salvage Company, is the same recycling compnay helped RiverLink recycle 100% of the cement (estimated to be 100,000 tons) at the old EDACO junkyard on Amboy Road that RiverLink  acquired in 2007. This time D. H. Griffin is helping to recycle materials and bring down the "Blue Buildings" - located at 115 1/2 to 119 Riverside Drive. Demolition is expected to be completed by Tuesday March 23, 2010. Read more...

Dennis Hulsing of Hulsing Hotels, Inc. has announced that he has purchased the Asheville Racquet Club and Fitness Center at 200 Racquet Club Road, Asheville, NC 28803. The athletic and tennis complex was owned by Buster and Karen Brown of Asheville who constructed the business 36 years ago. Hulsing, who moved to Asheville in 1999 with his wife Jill and two sons, currently owns three hotels in Asheville: Crowne Plaza Tennis and Golf Resort, Four Points by Sheraton Asheville Downtown and Clarion Inn Asheville Airport. He also owns Chop House Asheville Downtown, located inside the Four Points by Sheraton and several medical companies: Reliable Medical Supply, Mountain Area Sleep and Respiratory and Accucare. Asheville Middle School Students Brave the Cold to Learn About Stream Monitoring

Asheville Middle School's RiverCorps teamed up with RiverLink to do some stream-quality monitoring this week. AMS teacher, Jessica Carson, brought her students out to Carrier Park on Thursday afternoon to collect macro-invertebrates with the RiverLink education team. Stream-bottom macro-invertebrates (small animals that live in water at least part of their lives) are good indicators of a stream's quality because of their tolerance, or lack thereof, to pollution. Update on the Asheville Mural Project Summer 09

The Asheville Mural Project is poised to complete last summer's work on the concrete support piers of the I-240 Bridge downtown. The Lexington Avenue side of the Gateway Mural is estimated to be completed by the end of July, where artists Kurt Thaesler, Steve Lister, and Harper Leich have been working to finish the portion dedicated to the arts in Asheville. Parkway Opens One-Lane Traffic on May 15, 2009, Through Craggy Gardens Area. Blue Ridge Parkway officials are pleased to announce the opening of the Craggy Gardens Area to alternating one-lane traffic beginning on May 15, 2009. The Parkway detour between US 70 at Milepost 382.5 and NC Route 226 at Milepost 330.9/Gillespie Gap will be discontinued. Tomorrow the Goody Clancy team, who paid $170,000 to collect, synthesize, and present the work of the Advisory Team, will present it's Final Draft Downtown Master Plan (DTMP) to City Council. The plan is a result of 5,000 hours of volunteers' time and an enormous amount of input from every corner of downtown.
