Asheville Middle School Eighth Graders Put on FLOW 5K to Benefit RiverLink
On March 6th at Carrier Park, the Asheville Middle School eighth-graders will be putting on their second AMS FLOW (For the Love of Water) 5K race to benefit RiverLink. FLOW is an integrated unit of study designed for the eighth grade students focusing on the importance of water. Asheville Middle School Students Brave the Cold to Learn About Stream Monitoring
Asheville Middle School's RiverCorps teamed up with RiverLink to do some stream-quality monitoring this week. AMS teacher, Jessica Carson, brought her students out to Carrier Park on Thursday afternoon to collect macro-invertebrates with the RiverLink education team. Stream-bottom macro-invertebrates (small animals that live in water at least part of their lives) are good indicators of a stream's quality because of their tolerance, or lack thereof, to pollution. Save the French Broad 2009 has kicked off with over 25 area bars, restaurants, and businesses participating to sell fish. RiverLink is working with Sweetwater Brewery to Save the French Broad. Dozens of bars, restaurants and businesses are selling paper fish that say: I gave of my liver to save the river. This campaign is designed to raise awareness about the health of the French Broad River and to raise money so RiverLink can continue to build parks, greenways, conduct water quality monitor, and stream cleanups. Update on the Asheville Mural Project Summer 09
The Asheville Mural Project is poised to complete last summer's work on the concrete support piers of the I-240 Bridge downtown. The Lexington Avenue side of the Gateway Mural is estimated to be completed by the end of July, where artists Kurt Thaesler, Steve Lister, and Harper Leich have been working to finish the portion dedicated to the arts in Asheville. Parkway Opens at Craggy Gardens May 15th
Parkway Opens One-Lane Traffic on May 15, 2009, Through Craggy Gardens Area. Blue Ridge Parkway officials are pleased to announce the opening of the Craggy Gardens Area to alternating one-lane traffic beginning on May 15, 2009. The Parkway detour between US 70 at Milepost 382.5 and NC Route 226 at Milepost 330.9/Gillespie Gap will be discontinued. However, retaining wall reconstruction will continue until the estimated completion in mid-June when this section of Parkway will be fully opened for two-lane visitor traffic. Read more...
Asheville's Downtown Master Plan
Tomorrow the Goody Clancy team, who paid $170,000 to collect, synthesize, and present the work of the Advisory Team, will present it's Final Draft Downtown Master Plan (DTMP) to City Council. The plan is a result of 5,000 hours of volunteers' time and an enormous amount of input from every corner of downtown. Two weeks from tomorrow, on May 26, City Council will hold a public hearing on the Plan. Between now and then there's going to be a lot of wrangling over this vision for Asheville. Read more...

Bruisin' Ales Presented Community Award
Just over a week ago, our charity - FRIENDS of the Blue Ridge Parkway - presented us with a Community Award at the new REI store in South Asheville. Bruisin' Ales was honored as a top area fundraiser for the non-profit (almost $2000 over two years), which subsidizes governmental funds to maintain the Blue Ridge Parkway, protect views and trails, clean-up trash, get rid of invasive species, and save the native ones, like the hemlocks. French Broad River Cleanup and Concert April 25 in Brevard, NC
RiverLink and Duck Pond Pottery of Brevard, NC will host a stream cleanup of the French Broad River where it flows along Greenville Highway (Hwy 276) just a few miles outside of Brevard. We will leave from Hap Simpson Riverfront Park and go out in canoes to remove trash from the river.
