The 2010 Fins & Gills Classic
DATE: Saturday, May 8
TIME: 11 a.m. -- 3 p.m.
LOCATION: Asheville Outdoor Center
The 2010 Fins and Gills Classic is a special event we really want to make everyone in the RiverLink family aware of -- especially the families in our RiverLink family. Sponsored by the Asheville Outdoor Center and Asheville Clear Channel, all proceeds flow to RiverLink to help us carry on our mission of revitalizing the French Broad River and its tributaries as a place to live, work, play and fish.
The Fins and Gills Classic takes place on Saturday, May 8, and while it is partly a fishing tournament, there's more to it than that.
From 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., the Asheville Outdoor Center will offer a variety of activities for the whole family, including kayak and raft rides, live music, volleyball, gem mining, fishing classes, a casting contest, a playground and horse shoes. There will be hot dogs, chips and drinks available for lunch. We will also have some rods and reels sets to give away to our younger RiverLinkers to hopefully pique their interest in fishing, the French Broad River, and the outdoors.
As for the fishing tournament, participants will check in, complete liability forms and watch a quick safety video at the Asheville Outdoor Center starting at 7 a.m. Watercraft will be available for rent from the Asheville Outdoor Center, but you are invited to bring your own. A shuttle will take fisherfolk and their watercraft to the put-in point at Bent Creek Park. So we are not relocating fish, there will be three stations for weighing fish as we float downstream, and one at the takeout at the Asheville Outdoor Center. Prizes will be awarded for the biggest stringer, biggest fish and other categories. All entry fees will go to RiverLink. For those 13 and older, entry fee is $10; for kids under 12, $5. Boat rental is $10 per person or $20 for a canoe.
Please call Dave Russell (252-8474, ext. 118) at RiverLink if you have any questions. Otherwise, we hope to see you at the Asheville Outdoor Center on Saturday, May 8, starting at 11 a.m. It's a fun day and it's for a good cause. Come join in the fun!
