Paddlin the Nolichucky for a Cause
The Nolichucky River is one of the crown jewels of the region. Its crystal clear headwaters start at the base of the tallest mountain east of the Mississippi and flow through a gorge with some of the best whitewater in the Southeast, a stretch so scenic it has been considered for listing on the federal Wild and Scenic Rivers list. But the river is under threat. There has been a 45% increase in the amount of state listed impaired streams since 2006. The additional impact to the river has mostly come in a surprising package, sediment, or dirt is largely to blame for the poor conditions of these streams.
In order to effectively monitor the condition of the river, RiverLink's French Broad Riverkeeper is embarking on a two week monitoring and outreach trip to report back on the health of the river. This trip will provide a report card on challenges and successes along the Nolichucky River. The trip will start off with a kickoff event in Spruce Pine, NC on May 23rd at 11am, in Riverside Park, and continue to the mouth of the French Broad River. The public is invited to paddle along for the first two days of the trip (RSVP is requested). Along the way the French Broad Riverkeeper will be testing the water and making visual evaluations of the river's water quality.
The trip will also hold a series of events along the way to involve and educate the public about the challenges facing the river. The trip will feature a film festival, rafting trip, RiverFest, rain barrel construction workshop, and wildlife/bird tour. This is a great opportunity to get out and see the potential of the Nolichucky River, but to also begin to address its challenges.
RiverLink is regional non-profit spearheading the economic and environmental revitalization of the entire French Broad Watershed. This trip is the third in series of monitoring trips in the French Broad Watershed.
