Proposed COPA recommendations were distributed by Co-Chairman Steen following the March 15th House Select Committee Meeting on Certificat of Need (CON). Those recommendations suggested the creation of legislation that would have severe implications on Mission Health's ability to provide quality healthcare to residents of Western NC.

Mission Health believes that the CON Committee has neither had an adequate discussion regarding the proposed recommendations nor holds the level of experience needed to offer such far-reaching and unprecedented suggestions regarding COPA policy.

It is anticipated that those recommendations will now be included in the Committee's final interim report to be approved by the Committee on April 19th, and that legislation would then be drafted incorporating those recommendations that could be introduced at the start of the May 16th session.

Mission Health believes that all COPA recommendations should be removed from the CON Committee's final report.

If adopted into law, these recommendations will:

  • Lead to the elimination of jobs
  • Take what is already the State's most highly regulated health system to an unprecedented level of regulation never before seen in America
  • Dramatically reduce access to healthcare, particularly in rural areas
  • Pave the way for any hospital or health system in the nation, with the exception of Mission Health, to provide services to rural communities throughout Western NC
  • Greatly impact Mission Health's ability to provide quality healthcare throughout Western NC by restricting ability to recruit and retain qualified physicians
  • Represent anti-competitive public policy aimed exclusively at Mission Health to the benefit of health systems headquartered outside of Western NC.
With the April 19th House Select Committee on CON meeting only weeks away, it is imperative for you to call, write, or email your local NC House Representative today and urge them to reach out to CON Committee members and ask them to remove all COPA recommendations from the committee's final interim report.
