Local Artisan Offers Dominican Republic Cooperative Chocolate
Learning about the origins and the process of making chocolate from the cacao bean is what David Mason, owner of Black Mountain Chocolate will offer when he presents his single origin artisan chocolate tastings and presentation.
Responding to requests from various business and groups, Mason will be making on-site informational presentations and tastings throughout 2010.
Tours of his facility will still be available to groups by appointment only.
Black Mountain Chocolate is one of only about a dozen companies in the United States that crafts chocolate from the bean.
On Friday, February 12th, Mason will provide information and tasting of his La Red chocoalate at the French Broad Coop which is retailing his tins of chocolate.
Chris Roland, Grocery Manager, chose to sell La Red which is one of three varieties Mason handcrafts. Roland made this selection when he learned that this chocolate was made from cacao beans bought from the Dominican Republic's La Red Cooperative which works with more than 300 small-scale farmers who have created a network within the remote mountain villages.
"Being part of a cooperative here, we understand what it means to support other cooperatives globally," Roland says.
Mason asserts,"La Red addresses the need to bring living wages to the farmers and their families. Not only does Black Mountain Chocolate taste good, it is doing good!"
Future presentations and tastings will be listed on Black Mountain Chocolate's website: blackmountainchocolate.com
For those who want up-to-the minute information about Mason's chocolate whereabouts, he can be followed on Twitter or Facebook as well.
