Liza's Reef
Local Artist Lee James Pantas uses Art to Help Protect the Environment
Liza's Reef is the ongoing art and environmental defense project of Asheville artist Lee James Pantas, who is in the process of creating a series of paintings of an imaginary coral reef entitled "Liza's Reef". The overall aim of the project is to draw attention of the many environmental issues facing our world and to raise funds, through the sale of the paintings, for selected environmental organizations and orphanages. As of 2008, eleven paintings have been completed. In August 2015, all of the paintings completed at that time will be sold at auction and 50% of the profits donated to the Liza's Reef beneficiary organizations. These are two South Pacific orphanages: Treasure House Children's Home and Dilkusha Children's Home (Both in Fiji) and six environmental organizations: The Nature Center of Western North Carolina (Asheville, NC), Riverlink (Asheville, NC), The Coral Reef Alliance (San Francisco, CA), Sea Shepherd Conservation Society (Friday Harbor, WA) Epsilon Eta (Chapel Hill, NC), Save The Manatee Club (Maitland, FL), and Southern Alliance For Clean Energy (SACE)(Asheville, NC).
The paintings of Liza's Reef as they are finished can be seen on the project website, www.lizasreef.com. The website also has two science-based public education resource sections, "Hope For The Oceans" and "Hope For The Rain Forests," which have as their focus endangered ocean habitats, especially coral reefs and rain forests.
