Is President Obama Trying to Destroy America?

Editorial Reprint - Asheville Tribune - January 14, 2010

Within the energetic conservative internet community boils a pot dedicated to the belief that Barack Hussein Obama is deliberately destroying America. Conspiracy speculations persist on the authenticity of his citizenship, a murky history with unsavory handlers, and a spiritual foundation more closely akin to Muslim than Christian values. There is a resulting concern that our President is a carefully crafted impostor with a mission - and not one that is in our best interests.

Time will produce answers to these questions, but conservative thinkers need not wait for clarity on the big one. Our President is certainly trying to destroy America - but like most of his followers he probably doesn't know it. Intoxication, in any form, betrays awareness.

Bankrupting the USA

If one wished to disrupt America's success equation, busting the economy would be a good place to start. Obama and the Democrat majority in Congress were implementing a misguided spending explosion even before taking office. In the intervening year this team of out of this world spenders have managed to spend or commit more money than we once thought existed in the world.

In fairness, every President in memory has let us down when it comes to keeping the lid on spending. That includes the hollow conservancy of President George Bush who confusingly grew government with the enthusiasm of a stalwart socialist. Thanks to the "borrow and spend" polices of the Bush/Republican majority years, the bankruptcy train was rolling along well before America made Obama our newest engineer.

Super quick learners, Obama and company happily added Republican borrow and spend methodologies to their historical Democrat tax and spend skill set. Both passions have been fulfilled in funding a corrupt banking culture, a fragmented and special interest indulgent economic recovery plan, and the largest expansion of big government in our country's big history.

Per the credible research of The Heritage Foundation, if Obama stays on his present course he will double the deficit rate of Bush years and still generate an unprecedented increase in our local, state, and federal tax burden. Debt and wealth destruction at this level heralds the economic devastation of the dollar and America's economy.

Growing Big Government

Obama has made it clear in word and deed that he likes big government. It is not a myth that the President had the most liberal voting record on the most notoriously liberal elected body in our country - the U.S. Senate.

Almost every action he has taken since inauguration has resulted in the dramatic expansion of government at all levels. Much of the U.S. Constitution was crafted to resist this potential misery. Obama is rapidly shredding this safeguard to satisfy the cravings of his intended audience.

Politicians seeking favor know that restrained generosity with public funds is not the way you entice those willing to swap liberty and votes for comfort and hope. It is interesting to watch fast graying elected Obama try to cover the insatiable appetites created by fast talking campaigning Obama.

Abandoning the American Dream

In one year in office, President Obama has managed to diminish our country's factual Christian heritage, sidestep the Constitution with astounding audacity, and entwine Washington in our liberties and commerce with a tenacity spelling permanence. His model of political action merits a reminder that unrestrained governments are much more likely to become cages to servitude than catapults to freedom.

In his book, Escape from Freedom, philosopher Erich Fromm cautioned that true liberty actually scares most of us to death. He believed that with proper encouragement, our need to be comfortable and belong easily displaces freedom. The seductions of Adolph Hitler and the Nazi movement in Germany demonstrated the deadly potentials of any culture taking its liberties for granted.

Put simply, the American Dream is founded in the preservation of that freedom.With each new government law at the local, state, and national level; each new government entitlement funded with some other guy's money; and each new government bureaucrat needing to justify a position, that dream fades. It's sort of like a pair of jeans - when the blue is gone the holes come next.

Image or Substance

Like most of America's vanity kings in government and business, President Obama has a firm dedication to image over performance. More adult priorities would find his best energies invested in practical actions such as reforming our tax code; ending the free pass for those who employ illegal immigrants; proper enforcement of our trade agreements; responsible address of social security insolvency; and regulatory efforts more dedicated to keeping the system transparent and honest for all than rigged for a few. These actions and others of responsible governance, not promises of something for nothing, would define a President of substance.

Authentic conservatives value reason and truth and embrace the demands of the 9^th commandment. Speculation and conspiracy theory provide distraction and entertainment, but we should not expect the struggle for liberty to come so cheaply.

Obama is not purposefully trying to destroy America. Nor do intoxicated drivers purposefully kill families on dark and rainy nights. In neither case, however, do motives alter impact...

It is good to see that someone has the insight to see it as it is. Mr Obama will destory this country if congress doesn't stop him. Our only hope is that in the election on Tuesday, that a Republican can be elected to take away the hold he has on congress. We will end being a great nation if he keeps up. It would be a good thing to get him out of his office I think impeachment would be good. Yes I am in Florida but hope one day to move to Asheville.
