Home Schooling in Asheville

Home schooling is becoming increasingly popular in North Carolina. In fact, there were roughly 7,000 new home schools in our state this year. The North Carolina Department of Non-Public Education reports that 2,932 students in Buncombe County are home schooled. That's the 3rd largest home-school population in the state (Wake County and Mecklenburg County are the top two). According to a survey by the Institute for Education Sciences, about two thirds of home school families cite religious reasons for home schooling, while the other third state dissatisfaction with either the quality of education, or the social environment at a traditional school.
Deciding to home school, and planning curriculum can be confusing for many families. Home-school 'experts' do not always agree, and there are infinite options for structuring your school. You can teach all subjects by yourself, or you can hire people to help tutor your home-school student if, say, your algebra skills are a little rusty (although there are laws which define the amount of time someone outside your household can offer instruction). Many families who home school find, or create groups in order to share academic and recreational experiences.
In Asheville, our home-school population is thriving. There are several online groups that help home-schooling families connect with each other, including WNC-Homeschoolers, Asheville-Unschoolers, and HOME-Asheville. Some folks attend 'how-to' classes about home school at AGAPE (Acting on God's Authority as Parent Educators). The City of Asheville Parks and Recreation department runs a Home School Adventures program, The Health Adventure offers a program called Home School Happenings, and the Asheville Art Museum has a hands-on Home School Art Program.
If you are interested in home-schooling, the rules and regulations are available from the North Carolina Department of Non-Public Education, and you can also find additional information from the North Carolinians for Home Education.

We are new to homeschooling. My kids love it! I feel as if ive extended my daughters childhoods. However, as with any new experience, a little advice would not go amiss. Anyone care to share tips? Our grade levels are third and fourth.

I was home schooled as a kid, and although we had a close nit local group in Saluda, NC, we did not have the resources that are now readily available to home schoolers in Asheville and Buncombe County.
It's nice to know that there are groups and organizations in the community that support home school programs. Thanks for putting this article together for us!
