February 6th at 1 pm: Extreme Hike for the Cure Interest Meeting at Diamond Brand Outdoors
Deirdre Brand, with the North Carolina Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, will hold an informational meeting at our Arden store to talk about "Extreme Hike for the Cure," a fundraising, one day hike of thirty miles on the Art Loeb trail which takes place on April 24th. February 7th, 12 pm to 4 pm: Camp Fair at Diamond Brand Outdoors and Frugal Backpacker
Diamond Brand's Camp Fair will help parents and grandparents guide their child to the perfect summer camp in WNC. It also provides a one-stop-shop to meet representatives from over 25 different camps and to gain information all in one day, at one place. February 16th at 10 am: Oklawaha Greenway Walk with Gary
Gary will lead walkers on a walk from Jackson Park to Patton Park and back on the Greenway. Meet at Jackson Park in the parking lot by the Recreation Department Offices. 4 miles. For more information, contact Gary at geblen@diamondbrand.com.
February 16th at 7 pm: Stuart Cowles' Program at Diamond Brand
Stuart Cowles, owner of Climbmax climbing gym and certified climbing guide and mountaineer, will present a program on South America including the people, culture, and mountains of the Andes, as well as a slide show of Ecuador. February 18th, 7:30 to 9 pm: Whitewater Kayak Family Demo
Come to the Reuter Family YMCA in Biltmore Park to try out Diamond Brand's selection of whitewater kayaks and paddles. Kayaks and gear by the top names in the business will be available for use at the pool. This event is open to people of all experience levels and ages; the only requirements are that one must be able to swim in order to participate and those under age 16 need to be accompanied by an adult. February 20th at 10 am: Women's Hiking Group
Diamond Brand's Women's Hiking Group meets the 3rd Saturday of every month and it's a great way to get outdoors and have some girl time. The hiking group will meet at Diamond Brand at 10 am on Saturday, Feb. 20th and will carpool to the hiking location, which is TBD. The hikes are normally 5 - 7 miles in length. Jen Davis, who holds the women's world record on the AT and is owner of Blue Ridge Hiking Company, will be leading this hike. February 22nd at 7 pm: Outdoor Program at Historic Johnson Farm
Gary Eblen will present a one-hour program at Historic Johnson Farm, "Before You Go Outside." Whether you're a day hiker, car camper or backpacker, this presentation is intended to get you excited to "go outside and play." February 23rd at 6 pm: One Burner, One Pot Cook Off
Do you have a favorite camping meal you like to cook? Enter Diamond Brand's Camping Meal Cook Off! We'll be giving out great prizes for categories like originality, spiciest, easiest to clean up and most likely to draw mice. The Grand Prize winner gets a Jet Boil stove. Pre-registration is required by contacting Gary at geblen@diamondbrand.com or by calling 828-684-6262. We request that contestants pre-register by Wednesday, February 17th. All contestants receive a $10 gift card.
February 27th at 11 am: Kid's Craft Day at Diamond Brand
It's cold outside, so to assist our feathered friends, Diamond Brand will hold a craft day where Gary will teach kids and parents how to make their own bird houses. The event is free, but we encourage you to bring your own half-gallon paper or plastic juice or milk container. The suggested ages for this activity are ages 3 - 9 years old. Running Group:
Diamond Brand's Running Group will be taking a break for the month of February, but will start back up in early spring in time to prepare for spring/summer races. The running group runs 3 to 6 miles at a 10 min. to 8 min. per mile pace. Runs take place at various locations like Fletcher Park, the Mountains to Sea Trail and the Shut In Trail/Hard Times Road in Bent Creek. Each running group member is given a punch card and receives a punch for each running group attended, and two punches when you bring a friend. After 5 punches, members receive 20% off on running apparel, footwear and gear from Diamond Brand.
