Court Ruling on Forsyth County Prayer Policy May Affect Buncombe County

Forsyth County commissioners have been told to halt the practice of praying at the beginning of their meetings. This has drawn attention to the similar practice, occurring in Buncome County. Mark Barrett from the Asheville Citizen Times reports:

A federal judge struck down Forsyth County commissioners' policy of having prayer at the beginning of their meetings in a case that could hasten the end of a similar practice in Buncombe County.

Forsyth commissioners' policy violates the First Amendment's prohibition against government establishment of religion, wrote U.S. District Court Judge James Beaty Jr., who is based in the Forsyth County seat, Winston-Salem. The ruling was issued Thursday.

Buncombe and Forsyth commissioners have similar policies in which county staffers invite clergy from various religious bodies to pray at commissioners meetings.

Beaty adopted a recommended ruling by a federal magistrate, who wrote that a big problem with the policy was that so many of the prayers contained explicitly Christian references.

Forsyth's policy "has resulted in Government-sponsored prayers that advance a specific faith or belief and have the effect of affiliating the Government with that particular faith or belief," Beaty's ruling says.
