Cold Weather Mountain Biking for the Dedicated Mountain Bikers

Even when the temps are dropping below what most sane people consider as doable, true outdoor lovers rarely let the winter keep them locked up indoors. For mountain bikers, the amount of time spent riding could be rather short or trips that are hours long. If the digits are hitting single numbers or worse, below zero, then serious precautions should be taken.
The first thing bikers should do is use multiple layers of clothing. A nice warm base4 should be worn with a second layer of a cycling jersey (preferably one with an elongated back). There are many options to choose from gear you can find at a local store to those you have to special order. You can also find a good variety online (Use Amazon coupons to get a good deal). Merino wool tops work exceptionally well, because they don't let sweat seep into your clothes and make you wet. The wool sweeps away any perspiration nice and quick so you don't get damp and sick merely from sweating.
>Bikers need to have some good longs if they're planning on heading out in very cold temperatures. No, that doesn't mean a goofy look is required; they don't have to wear bib tights. Ground Effect has some fleece lined longs that will do the trick called Daddy Long Legs. They even have WindFoil knees to help protect your knees since they often are very prone to exposure.
Gloves - thermal gloves that cover the fingers. You could also pair up a couple of pairs of gloves to give your fingers layered warmth.
Cycling Overshoes - not only good for cold weather mountain biking, but also for wet conditions. It's very important to ensure feet stay dry and warm.
Camel-back or Hydration Pack - even though it may be terribly cold, there's still risk of dehydration. Actually even more so, since many people don't associate it with the cold. Stay hydrated.
