Dear Bubbi,
I want to quit my job and start a business, but my partner says it's too risky at this stage of our lives. He and I have been together for 14 years and we're only in our early 40's, so I don't get his reasoning. I don't want to wait until I'm close to retirement age to make this much needed change. Any ideas on how to get through to him?
~Determined To Do It Now!
Dear Determined To Do It Now!,
Have you considered that your partner might be worried about something else besides your age? Could he feel that you need more financial security or experience before you make this big change? Is he concerned about how it will affect your relationship? Why don't you ask him to elaborate on the reasons he doesn't want you to do this. Sounds like what you two guys need is a good talk.
Dear Bubbi,
I've dated the same guy since high school. We're both 24 now. The problem is that I don't have anything in common with him anymore. He's still into football, beer and hanging out with his high school buddies. I'm more interested in people who share my passion for the arts. We rarely go out together and honestly, I don't even care. I'm ready to let go of this stale romance, but have no idea how to do it. p.s. He thinks everything is just perfect between us.
~Ready To Move On
Dear Ready To Move On,
The best way to handle this is to be honest with your high school sweetheart. The longer you drag this out, the worse it will become. Sit him down (alone) and tell him the truth. Just be prepared for his look of complete surprise! My suggestion...Try to part as friends. It's much nicer that way.
