Ask Bubbi Advice Column - Monday November 30th 2009
Dear Bubbi,
I am not the most religious or conservative person, but I am very uncomfortable when people curse around me. I feel like it's getting worse and worse with all age groups. Is there a nice way to say that it bothers me without having to walk away during a conversation. P.S. I'm a 23 female, not an old fuddy-duddy.
~Not An Old Fuddy-Duddy
Dear Not An Old Fuddy-Duddy,
I think it's perfectly fine to say, "Can we please talk without cursing!" If the person you're talking with gets offended, well that's their problem. I think the English language has taken a beating in the past few decades and it's time to do something about it. I'm not an old fuddy-duddy (just old) and I agree with your concerns.
Dear Bubbi,
My boyfriend wants to get engaged on Christmas day but I have a situation that needs to be resolved before we take that step. His Mother (who isn't the nicest person) calls me a country bumpkin behind my back. I am college educated (same college as my boyfriend/ her son) and not ashamed of the fact that I come from a very small southern town. My family says to ignore her and marry my boyfriend, who I love very much! What do you suggest I do?
~Small Town Girl
Dear Small Town Girl,
I agree with your family...Marry the boyfriend! In this situation, the less fuss you make over your future Mother-in-law's silly comments, the better. You and your boyfriend are both adults and obviously very much in love. Be nice to his Mother and let her know how happy you are to be part of the family. If she's a smart cookie, she'll come around!
