Dear Bubbi,

I was widowed 4 years ago and my friends want me to start going out again. A few of them have had good luck meeting men online through one of the matchmaking services. I'm 52 years old and my children are grown and out of the house. Do you think this is a silly idea?

Oy gevalt! (oh no). How did we ever survive before computers? Back in my day, it was all word of mouth and usually the neighborhood shadkhn (matchmaker) knew of a "good catch" to fix you up with. Be realistic about what you're looking for. If you hate cold weather, the fellow from Alaska who lives in an igloo may not be for you even if he has the face of Paul Newman (may he rest in peace) and the body of Moses in the Ten Commandments. On second thought...if he's willing to relocate...turn down the a/c and throw another quilt on the bed. Compromise is everything!

Dear Bubbi,

My best friend from college came for a visit after he lost his job and hasn't gotten off the couch in weeks. My 2 roommates have given me an ultimatum...Get rid of my old college buddy by the end of the month or the two of us can find a new place to live. What should I do?

Was your friend such a shnorrer (mooch) in college or is this a post college crisis? You have 2 options: Give him a swift kick in the tuches (rear end) and show him to the door or be a "best" friend and try to find out what's going on. Sounds like your friend may need some help figuring out what to do next with his life. Either way, your roommates have made it clear...he's going to have to find a new place to hang his hat.
