Ask Bubbi Advice Column - Monday December 7th 2009
Dear Bubbi,
I'm facing the same problem I deal with every year. I never know how to get through the holidays without offending someone in the family. My husband's family and my family invite us for Christmas and they both live on opposite parts of the country. We do the every other year thing but whoever we don't visit that year, lays on the heavy duty guilt and makes us feel miserable. I'm ready to say NO to both sides and just stay home. Any advice?
~Tired Of Feeling Guilty
Dear Tired Of Feeling Guilty,
My thought is...Both sides love you and miss you and are trying to let you know how much they wish you were with them every year. They may not even realize how their words are coming across. If it bothers you and your husband that much...have a talk with both sides and gently remind them that you are doing the best you can do! Don't let this ruin your holidays! One last thought...How about hosting Christmas one year (if you have the space) and having both sides come to you?
Dear Bubbi,
Our boss cut out all holiday bonuses because of the recession. The problem is when he hired me six months ago, he never mentioned anything about that and I was led to believe that it was part of my package. The rest of the staff said they were told this almost a year ago. I feel scammed?
~Where's My Bonus
Dear Where's My Bonus,
Do you have anything in writing that mentions the bonus? If not, it's possible that your boss simply forgot to tell you. With the job market being so tight these days, you may be better off not making a big issue out of it. It's your call!
