Ask Bubbi

Dear Bubbi,

My boyfriend and I are having a difficult time finding an apartment to rent and his Mother feels it's because I am Hispanic and her son is African American. I'm having a hard time accepting that because we both have professional backgrounds and outstanding references. We recently moved to North Carolina from New York and refuse to believe that this kind of discrimination still exists.

~Can't Find A Place To Live

Dear Can't Find A Place To Live,

The North Carolina Fair Housing Act makes it illegal to discriminate in housing because of race, color, religion, sex, national origin, physical or mental handicaps, or family status (families with children). You don't mention whether or not you have secured jobs here yet. If you haven't, the issue may be your current financial status. My advice is to not make any assumptions until you have followed up with a phone call to inquire as to why you were turned down. If you feel that you have been discriminated against, you can contact the State of North Carolina and file a complaint. Good luck with your search!

Dear Bubbi,

I'm new in town, recently widowed and anxious to make friends. I've signed up for classes, joined groups and volunteer my services to meet people. I still haven't made any close friends. Any suggestions? I'm retired and have plenty of time on my hands.

~Lonely Lady

Dear Lonely Lady,

You are some busy lady and that's wonderful! I think the reason you haven't made any close friends has nothing to do with you. I believe that people are a little more cautious these days about who they let in to their "circle". Don't be afraid to make the first move...How about suggesting a lunch date or two with some of your new acquaintances. Eventually you will find a few people who you "click" with. In the meanwhile, continue getting out of the house and living life to the fullest!
