Ask Bubbi Advice Column - Monday August 17th 2009
Dear Bubbi,
I come from a really big extended family and I get nonstop invitations to weddings, birthdays etc. The problem is, I'm on a tight budget and can't afford to buy lavish gifts for every occasion. Any suggestions on what to give that doesn't make me look like a cheapskate?
~Strapped For Cash
Dear Strapped For Cash,
Here's where being creative kicks in. Think outside the box on ways to come up with a bilik (inexpensive) gift. How about a gift subscription to an art magazine for that art lover, or a "rainy day" fun box filled with goodies for that little birthday boy, or a beautiful honeymoon photo album for the wedding couple? Just remember the old saying ... "It's the thought that counts."
Dear Bubbi,
My boyfriend acts normal around me, but when we're with friends he behaves like a jerk. He always has to have the last word on everything even if he knows nothing about the subject. We've talked about this a hundred times and he gives me the clueless look and tells me I'm imagining things. I love him but at times I can't stand him.
~In Love With Mr. Clueless
Dear In Love With Mr. Clueless,
Sounds like your boyfriend may have some insecurity issues when it comes to socializing. Maybe when he was a kid, he was the last person picked for a team at recess. All kidding aside, something inside his head tells him he has to always come out on top. Here's an idea ... Why don't you video tape one of these heated discussions and play it back to him when you're alone. It might open his eyes brait

Hello Bubbi. Here's my short plea for your help (it could be longer, I'm trying to keep it short).
NO I'm not in Nigeria with an Uncle that needs your bank account....
I am from the mountains of NY, you've heard of WOODSTOCK, that area.
I left my abusive neurotic Jewish home at 16. They made me get a job at 13, so since I'm 31 now, I figure I can be depended upon to work.
I have an impressive resume and I have owned and operated various businesses as well as worked for small and large ones. But who hasn't these days?
Due the futility of sending out literally thousands of resumes for jobs I was qualified for (all over the US).......I left.
I was offered a job in another state I had never been to, and left for there first. It was a job working at an Abercrombie store in a Mall (not funny, stop laughing).
After that job turned into a living nightmnare and Obama offered me unemployment money while I searched for more work = futile, I left.
I wenet to where a University degree meant something: SOUTH KOREA (stop laughing, not funny).
Maybe you think this is a 1st world country, well you're wrong. It is a 3rd world country.
Maybe you think I'm new here and I don't know. But actually I've been here for about 2 years in total. It is totally 3rd world.
Maybe you read the newspapers regularly and think that we're on the verge of nuclear war here, well you'd be right on that one.
I am a smart, natuaral, organic, spiritual, funny, cool person and I did not deserve to be squeezed out of my own country.
My plan is to take my meager savings from teaching English here, and go to the Asheville area.
Do I know anybody? Nope.
Have I ever been there? Nope.
Do have have any clue if, or how I could make a livng there? Nope?
The rent looks cheap and when I owned a headshop about 10 years ago it was the hot place to run to and from my online research, it still looks cooler than pretty much everywhere else, well except all the places I can't afford like Hawaii or something.
I was desperate when I packed my bags and got on the plane, and I'm desperate now too.
I still have a few more months left in my employment contract here, if they don't nuke us first.
SO if you have any genuine help you can suggest or provide, please do.
I deserve help, I worked hard my whole life and have pretty much nothing to show for it, not even the ability to live in my own country.
Please don't send me emails about MLM, Jesus, or tellemarketing. I just can't deal with it.
