Ask Bubbi

Dear Bubbi,

I'm a food server who has been trying to get considered for a management position for over two years. Every time I try to bring up the subject with the restaurant manager, he tells me, we'll talk about it later. I love the place I work and don't want to leave, but this is getting ridiculous. Any suggestions would be great.

~Ready To Move Up

Dear Ready To Move Up,

Make a list of 3 times that you could get together with your manager. Hand it to your manager and say," I know we're both very busy, so I wrote down a few times that I'm available to discuss management opportunities. Would you please let me know which time works best for you." If he continues to ignore you, consider taking your talents elsewhere!

Dear Bubbi,

This might sound weird to say but I feel invisible everywhere I go, like no-one even notices me. I'm not very outgoing and have no idea how to get people to talk to me. I'm hoping you can give me some suggestions.

~Silent Sam

Dear Silent Sam,

Think of a few topics that most people your age would be interested in talking about and then you start up the conversation. For practice, say something to someone standing in line with you at the grocery store. Then try it in a more social situation. Read up on local issues and know what is happening in the world. It may take some time but eventually, you will be comfortable talking to just about anyone.
