On March 6th at Carrier Park, the Asheville Middle School eighth-graders will be putting on their second AMS FLOW (For the Love of Water) 5K race to benefit RiverLink. FLOW is an integrated unit of study designed for the eighth grade students focusing on the importance of water. The essential questions posed to students include, what is the water cycle and how does it work, how are people and water connected, and who owns water?

This race is one part of the community service component of the project with the proceeds going to RiverLink. All aspects of the planning are put together by the students; designing the logo and Web site, getting the t-shirts and prizes donated, judging the race, setting up the booths, and preparing and sending all the press releases! It is amazing to see these 8th grade students become so empowered. Last year the students raised $1,000! This year the money will be donated to RiverLink to build more walking and bike paths along the French Broad.

Registration forms can be downloaded at http://www.ashevillecityschools.net/schools/ams/FLOW/default.aspxr. Completed registration forms may be dropped off at the Asheville Middle School main office or mailed by February 26th to ATTN: FLOW Registration, Asheville Middle School, 197 South French Broad Ave., Asheville, NC 28801.
