2009 Fantasy Football Sleepers: Consider These Wide Receivers for this Season’s Fantasy Drafts
If you play fantasy football then sleeper picks begin to dominate your mind during July and August every year. As the season draws closer the analysis of sleeper value deepens and mock drafts are in full swing. This season there are multiple sleeper picks for wide receivers. Here are a few of the favorites fantasy experts are talking about.
Brian Robiskie - Cleveland Browns
Robiskie has an excellent chance at winning a starting slot as wide receiver with the Cleveland Browns. The Browns don't have a lot of choices. Robiskie has soft hands (unlike Braylon Edwards) and is someone worth targeting late in fantasy drafts (during round 13 and up) or monitoring in the pre-season to see if he is given a starting job. According to the FootballsFuture.com article "NFL Draft Sleepers" by Robert Davis, "Robiskie's father coaches in the NFL.. What truly sets Robiskie apart is the coaching he has received all his life. You can see the influence his father has had on him, as he runs crisp routes and has tremendous hands." Robiskie may not be what Davis calls "a true game breaker", but he does consistently give above average performances on the field and his diverse athletic abilities make him an awesome sleeper pick.
Mohamed Massaquoi - Cleveland Browns
See above for starting opportunity with the Browns. It says something that the Browns selected 2 WRs in the second round of the NFL draft? Maybe Massaquoi or Robiskie will get a starting job and with an improved Brady Quinn at QB and a Browns team that is likely to find itself losing a lot, if one of these guys wins a starting job, he could produce great value for the smart fantasy owner who monitored the situation and snacthed up the rookie who wins the starting role.
Mike Thomas - Jacksonville Jaguars
There is a good chance that one of the four rookies that the Jacksonville Jaguars drafted in the NFL draft will win a starting job. Thomas has the skills to succeed if he were to win a starting role. He is a sleeper to consider later in the season. Keep an eye on him in the pre-season to get a good idea of his future value. Potentially he could excel if given the opportunity.
T.J. Houshmandzadeh - Seattle Seahawks
Matt Hasselbeck is back in the saddle, claiming to be 100% healthy and ready to play after spending some time in off-season training. When you see Hasselbeck throwing "Housh" the rock, you know he is primed for an incredible season. Plus, Seattle loves to pass! "Housh" should see the ball coming his way early and often this season.
Wes Welker - New England Patriots
If you are looking for a reliable fantasy draft pick don't overlook Wes Welker of the New England Patriots. He displays great skill on the field and it is easy to identify his strengths and weaknesses. FFToolbox.com reports in the 2009 Outlook posted by Daniel Kalles on May 21, 2009, "Welker has been the model of consistency since arriving in New England in 2007. Welker is a valuable receiver in all fantasy leagues, but he is a stud in point per reception leagues. In his 2 seasons in New England he has 223 receptions for 2,340 yards and 11 touchdowns. While the touchdowns don't stand, the 223 receptions is the most in the NFL over that span."
Chad Ochocinco - Cincinnati Bengals
The experts can agree that in 2008 Ochocinco had a bad season, but if he starts the season strong, healthy and with a positive attitude he'll be a great asset to any team. The Cincinnati Enquirer reports, "Bengals WR Chad Ochocinco says he has regained his hunger for football after a bad season in 2008." It is also being reported that Ochocinco is in good physical shape and has strengthened his relationships with other team members. This bodes well for anyone considering him for a fantasy draft.
